Animation for the OECD Learning Compass
The OECD Learning Compass 2030 is part of the Future of Education and Skills 2030 project. It is a guide for students, teachers, and school systems to adapt to a changing world through key frameworks. Developed by the OECD in consultation with policy-makers, researchers, school leaders, teachers, students, social partners and international organisations from around the world, this framework outlines the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values students need to succeed in life and make a positive impact on their communities.
The brief
We were asked to transform the OECD Learning Compass 2030 from a static visual into a dynamic, interactive, shareable set of digital assets to be used across the OECD Education 2030 project.
Our approach
We began with client consultations and developed sketches to fully understand the Compass and its aims. We then created a design style that brought the Compass to life as an illustrated, interactive image map, and a short explainer animation, summarising the concept.
Visual language
The clean, modern illustration style uses curved lines, soft pastel colours and smooth animations. The central compass metaphor is highlighted with saturated colour and orbiting layers, while characters and contexts are represented using simple figures and scenes that transition smoothly from one to the next.
The deliverables
In addition to a primary static design for the Learning Compass graphic, we developed an interactive web-based version, and a 2-minute explainer animation.
