Augmented reality posters for the Capacity Building Programme for Employment Promotion (CBPEP)
With over 12 million people unemployed in South Africa, creating employment is top of the public and political agenda. The Capacity Building Programme for Employment Promotion (CBPEP) was a multi-sector, EU-funded initiative, working at the interface of government, the private sector and civil society, to build capacity and infuse innovative thinking into the approach to solving the growing unemployment crisis.
The brief
This multi-deliverable project spanned two years and included a communication strategy, work plan, full-suite branding and a range of tailored communication products. Nearing programme completion, we were asked to create an interactive summary of CBPEP's work to be showcased at the close-out event.
Our approach
We designed a series of posters with augmented reality (AR) features for an immersive, interactive experience. Users could scan visual tags on the posters with an app to view animations and video interviews on their phones. Working with the CBPEP team, we identified key programme lessons, then developed written and video content for each lesson to create a layered multimedia journey reflecting the programme's approach.
Visual language
The posters incorporate elements from the CBPEP brand identity, such as the large forward-pointing arrowhead motif that guides viewers through the colour-coded lessons. Smaller arrowheads, symbolising progress, are integrated into the illustrations, and the AR animations for a seamless transition between physical and digital elements.
The deliverables
Eight A0-sized posters displayed on easels at the close-out event. Each poster featured 1-2 scannable video elements. By following the posters sequentially around the room, users could trace the programme journey through the event space.
