Branding and communication for #SkillsBoostWesternCape

This data-driven research and action project was a multi-stakeholder, multi-sector initiative that aimed to help tackle rising unemployment in the Western Cape, South Africa, by promoting digital skills.

The brief

Lushomo was tasked with creating a communication strategy and brand identity for this project, followed by a range of multi-media products. The goal was to resonate with a diverse audience, from young job-seekers and employers to educators and policymakers. The resulting identity therefore needed to be fresh, locally relevant and authoritative.

Our approach

Creative direction was rooted in a vibrant colour palette paired with a dark background for impact. First we developed the name for the initiative and a bold, uplifting logo inspired by tech and interfaces. We then created a unique data visualisation style and a range of custom icons and illustrations that could be used across all deliverables.

Visual language

The research data is enlivened by bright colours and simplified infographics. Approachable characters and a connected node-like motif also help to communicate the collaborative nature of the initiative and the far-reaching impact of digital skills.

The deliverables

Over the course of several months, project deliverables included a brand toolkit, event assets (PowerPoint presentations, banners, agendas, invitations, etc.) social media GIFs and static tiles, technical and infographic reports, and a series of videos.

The highlights

The project had the ambitious goal of making the Western Cape a globally leading digital hub by 2030. We were privileged to help share data and direction in support of this goal.
