Practical factsheets on personal-level actions to reduce air pollution exposure in the WHO European Region
Air pollution is the leading environmental health risk in the WHO European Region. Research shows that, while policy-level action is key, personal-level actions can have a great impact in helping to reduce exposure. In 2024, the WHO Regional Office for Europe released a report entitled Personal-level actions to reduce air pollution exposure in the WHO European Region. The report outlines the latest evidence and strategies, backed by literature review and expert consultation
The brief
Based on the full report, we were asked to develop a series of factsheets that distill the complex findings into practical, actionable advice, primarily for healthcare practitioners. Each factsheet was to focus on a key topic and function both as a standalone resource and as part of a combined booklet.
Our approach
After analysing the full report, we summarised the content into clear, user-friendly language. Through collaboration with the WHO Euro team, we refined the key messages and structure for each factsheet. We then developed a cohesive visual identity that could differentiate individual factsheets while creating a unified series.
Visual language
The series uses a muted colour palette with complementary colour pairs. Each factsheet features one main colour with a secondary highlight, allowing visual distinction between topics when presented individually or combined. An air-current motif and illustrations help to convey key messages throughout.
The deliverables
The factsheet series includes a cover design for the combined document and five specific factsheets on:
- Personal-level actions to reduce exposure to air pollution
- Physical activity and air pollution
- Air cleaners and air pollution
- Face coverings and air pollution
- Mobility and air pollution
