Animation for the Compendium of WHO and other UN guidance on health and environment
The Compendium of WHO and other UN Guidance on health and environment is a comprehensive collection of guidance, interventions and actions, along with a framework for thinking about health and environment interventions. The guidance is organised into categories, including air pollution, climate change, chemicals, radiation and food systems, all aimed at improving health by creating healthier environments.
The brief
In addition to designing the report itself, Lushomo created a short animated video to support the Compendium launch. The animation needed to illustrate the connection between health and environmental issues and communicate the importance of the Compendium to policymakers, practitioners and the general public.
Our approach
Working closely with the WHO team, we first clarified the Compendium’s structure, goals, and key messages. We then created a script and storyboard, using visual scenes and metaphors to simplify the core ideas. The narrative leads viewers from the problem to the solution, showing how the Compendium connects guidance with real-world challenges.
Visual language
To represent the environmental factors impacting climate and health, we created stylized motifs that unified the design and animation. A custom illustration style was developed to match the Compendium’s tone, using bright, approachable visuals to reflect global diversity. Friendly, inclusive characters with non-realistic colors represent various communities, while environmental scenes simplify abstract ideas through visual metaphors.
The deliverables
The deliverables included a two-minute explainer animation, designed for use on the WHO website, in presentations, and on social media, which can be viewed here. Additionally, shortened social media teaser clips were created, optimized for promotion across various platforms.
