The Compendium of WHO and other UN guidance on health and environment
The Compendium of WHO and other UN guidance on health and environment is a comprehensive collection of guidance, interventions, 500 actions and a framework for thinking about health and environment, all aimed at improving health by creating healthier environments. These are organised into categories, such as air pollution, water, sanitation and hygiene, climate change, chemicals, radiation, or food systems.
The brief
To develop a design style and layout for the full Compendium document, then to adapt and apply this style to a range of communication tools used by the WHO to promote healthier environments for healthier people.
Our approach
First we developed a set of motifs to represent the thematic areas – these were used as a visual vocabulary to identify and help users move through the relevant sections. We then incorporated the lines and colours from these motifs into an illustration and infographic style that was adaptable across diverse static and animated deliverables.
Visual language
The identity combines human and nature-centred illustrations with clean, consistent lines in icons and infographics. Unexpected use of colour creates striking scenes of environmental impact on health, thereby underlining the need for urgent action.
The deliverables
In addition to designing the full Compendium report, we created a range of affiliated products including, infographics, web banners, social media tiles, an animation and a database of reviews on interventions in environment, climate change and health.
The highlights
The Compendium compiles existing guidance from over 400 documents in a clear and organised format. To keep the information current, it will be updated annually or as soon as new, major WHO or UN health and environment guidance is released.
