50th anniversary poster installation for the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR)

The Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) is a global programme of scientific collaboration co-sponsored by UNICEF, UNDP, the World Bank and WHO. In 2024, TDR celebrated its 50th anniversary and wanted to highlight certain key moments and activities in the programme’s work. Just one example was a long-standing contribution to the elimination of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in Bangladesh in 2023.

The brief

Lushomo was tasked with creating a series of nine large-scale posters to be displayed in the WHO Headquarters building in Geneva. Each poster needed to spotlight a key roleplayer and project in TDRs five-decade journey. The aim was to focus on the individuals behind the research, emphasising the human-centered impact of TDR’s work.

Our approach

A cohesive visual approach was developed using TDR’s new branding. On each poster, the visual lynchpin was a portrait photograph of the researcher, practitioner or patient who exemplified the work done in addressing a particular challenge in infectious disease.

Visual language

Deep-etched photographs are set against a backdrop of bold colours. A consistent structure ties the series together and overlapping colour frames create a visual 'bleed' or connection that leads the reader from one poster to the next.

The deliverables

A portable printed installation of nine A0 posters that reflected TDR’s achievements and commemorated its 50-year legacy. These were also adapted into social media tiles to support the real-world installation.
