Video for the Programme for Improving Mental Health Care (PRIME)
PRIME was an eight-year research programme working to integrate mental health into primary care in low- and middle-income countries. Through projects in Ethiopia, India, Nepal, South Africa, and Uganda, PRIME developed and tested district-level care plans that improved detection and outcomes for people with mental illness, thereby showing that collaboration and local leadership can help close the mental health treatment gap.
The brief
Lushomo was commissioned to conceptualise and produce a short documentary-style video highlighting PRIME’s achievements, recommendations and next steps. The film was set to be launched at a high-level London event for policymakers and health sector leaders.
Our approach
Our aim was to clearly communicate PRIME’s research and activities, while capturing the emotion and urgency around managing mental health. We did this by blending live action footage with graphic overlays and a voiceover narrative.
Visual language
From the dark, evocative opening scenes, the film quickly communicates the depth and intensity of the challenge. It then uses charts, maps, and real footage to show that integrating mental health into primary care is both necessary and achievable.
The deliverables
The development of a documentary-style video in response to overwhelming data illustrating the mental illness treatment gap in low- and middle-income countries.
