Tobacco Control Toolkit developed for the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC)

Designed in 2017, and still well-used, this webtool is an interactive guide developed for the WHO FCTC, an evidence-based treaty, developed in response to the globalisation of the tobacco epidemic to promote public health and international health cooperation.

The brief

Despite the fact that tobacco causes over seven million deaths each year, tobacco litigation is still mired by a range of technical and procedural barriers. To help individuals and groups take action against the tobacco industry, Lushomo was asked to create an interactive online toolkit explaining and illustrating the possible scenarios, legal paths and considerations.

Our approach

Our expertise in health advocacy played a key role in developing this toolkit. Working with legal experts and a team at Oxford University, we focused on understanding the legal processes and then translated them into a decision-tree based toolkit that simplifies complex information, provides resources and remains accessible to national legal teams.

Visual language

The tool presents complex legal processes in flow diagrams or decision trees, breaking each step down into simple, well-explained yes/no questions and answers. The colour palette is intentionally muted, relying on contrasting green and red for 'yes' and 'no' options, respectively. Key decision points can therefore be highlighted in a concise visual summary of each path.

The deliverables

The toolkit features a quiz to help users identify their particular scenario. It also includes navigation aids, context-sensitive options for additional information and links to legal case studies and source documents. Since its inception, the toolkit has been translated into all five UN languages.
