Campaign for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, 2025

While devastating at any time, gender-based violence (GBV) tends to spike during periods of conflict, due to factors such as increased isolation, breakdowns in health and social services, and the weaponisation of sexual violence. As a part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence in 2025, WHO wanted to focus specifically on the needs of women and girls during conflict and humanitarian emergencies.

Gender

The brief

We were asked to design a set of social media tiles that would immediately convey the need for GBV prevention and response efforts in humanitarian emergencies. They also needed to represent the roles of health workers, policy-makers, and communities in seeking and finding solutions.

Our approach

We started by exploring simple scenes and symbols that had the emotional impact required to cut through users' crowded social media feeds. We then developed a design style that amplified the impact by humanising the information.

Visual language

A limited colour palette of black, white and dark orange (synonymous with GBV) is combined with sketchy illustrations evoking a raw, protest-style aesthetic. Typography is bold, distressed and uneven, similar to the stencil prints used in social activism.

The deliverables

Campaign deliverables included a set of six social media tiles and a screensaver.

The highlights

According to WHO, studies support the heightened risk of violence for women and girls living through humanitarian emergencies. In our current times of increased civil and political unrest, it is more important than ever to raise awareness of this reality and prioritise the protection of services for women and girls.
